A coronavirus outbreak was registered at the Paris Olympics. During the Olympic Games, 40 athletes were infected with COVID-19.
A briefing of the World Health Organization was held in Geneva, where the issue of the spread of COVID-19 at the 2024 Games was raised.
«In recent months, regardless of the season, there have been surges in COVID-19 infections in different countries, including at the Olympic Games. More than 40 athletes have tested positive,» said WHO representative Maria Van Kerkhove.
«We are monitoring the situation in France together with national health authorities. The delegation has developed special protocols. It is important to note that this is not only about COVID, but also about any health situation that we are monitoring. It is also important for me to emphasize the fact that yesterday the WHO shared figures that are compiled based on media reports and should not be considered official,» Communications Director for the Organizing Committee Anne Deschamps told reporters.
The official representative of the organizing committee could not provide exact data on the number of infected. «We can only assess the situation at the national level. But I can say that at this stage the numbers are small,» she said.
