The World Health Organization (WHO) warns of surging COVID-19 infections and new variants of the coronavirus. The UN website says.

As noted, new waves of infection have been registered in the Americas, Europe and the western Pacific.

«Data from our sentinel-based surveillance system across 84 countries reports that the percent of positive tests for SARS-CoV-2 has been rising over several weeks. Overall, test positivity is above 10 per cent, but this fluctuates per region. In Europe, percent positivity is above 20 percent,» the statement says.

At least 40 athletes were infected at the Olympic Games.

WHO is calling on governments to intensify vaccination campaigns, ensuring that high-risk groups are immunized every 12 months, and warns that as the virus continues to evolve and spread, there is an increased risk of a more severe strain that could potentially be undetectable by monitoring systems and unresponsive to medical intervention.
