Kamala Harris formally secured the Democratic presidential nomination.
The U.S. Vice President received the support of 99 percent of 4,567 delegates who took part in the «virtual» party roll call, The New York Times reports.
She became the first woman of color and the first woman of South Asian descent to run for president from one of the two leading American parties.
If Kamala Harris manages to defeat Republican nominee Donald Trump, she will become the first woman to lead the U.S.
She was the only contender for the Democratic nomination after incumbent U.S. President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.
According to CNN and AP, citing sources, Kamala Harris has chosen 60-year-old Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice president candidate.
Tim Walz is a former teacher and former U.S. National Guard soldier. He served 12 years in Congress representing a conservative rural district before becoming Minnesota governor in 2019. As Reuters reported, Walz could help Harris «poach» Republicans’ core voters — white Americans from rural areas.
