Employees of one of TV channels in Kyrgyzstan detained for extortion

A journalist and cameraman of one of the TV channels in Kyrgyzstan were detained for extortion. The press center of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) reported.

The media workers have reportedly created a sustainable scheme to extort money.

«Media representatives took part in raids together with the Department of the Patrol Police Service, where traffic violations were recorded. Some journalists blackmailed the driver with video materials filmed during the raid,» the statement says.

To give legitimacy to their actions, they forced the driver to write a promissory note and took the car as a pledge.

On July 9, the journalist and cameraman were caught red-handed while taking $2,000 and placed in a temporary detention center of the SCNS. A set of necessary measures is being carried out to identify officials involved in such facts.

The SCNS reminds of inadmissibility of violation of the country’s legislation, including by the media by creating illegal extortion schemes using their professional activities. If detected, appropriate measures will be taken, including criminal ones, and citizens who suffered from such facts are urged to contact the following number: 0312620585.
