Ombudsperson of the Kyrgyz Republic Jamilya Jamanbaeva called on the human rights Ombudsmen of the CIS countries to step up interaction in order to ensure the protection of the rights of migrants. The Ombudsperson stated this at a meeting of the CIS Human Rights Commission, which was held via video conference.

The Institute of Ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan compiled and summarized analytical materials presented by the Ombudsman’s Institutes of Russia, Kazakhstan and government agencies of Belarus. Based on its results, she prepared recommendations for colleagues from the CIS countries regarding improving legislation in the field of migrants’ rights.

«Migrant workers often face violations of their rights. These are not only difficult working conditions, but migrants are often discriminated. This is what prompted us to propose studying the regulations of the CIS countries in the field of migrants’ rights. The majority often find themselves in a vulnerable position — due to strict migration laws, they may be prohibited from entering the country,» Jamilya Jamanbaeva said and suggested adopting the best practices in this area.

A meeting of the CIS Human Rights Commission, at which the Ombudsmen will consider all recommendations, will take place on June 27 in St. Petersburg.
