Kempir-Abad case: Nurlan Asanbekov attempts self-immolation

Nurlan Asanbekov, a defendant in Kempir-Abad case, attempted to commit self-immolation. Human rights activist Aziza Abdirasulova posted the video on Facebook.

According to her, Asanbekov became ill at yesterday’s trial.

«He recently underwent a complicated surgery. The man was taken from the courtroom to the hospital. But in the evening the police came there and demanded that the doctors discharge Asanbekov. Then he doused himself with gasoline and wanted to burn himself, as he saw no other way to fight injustice,» the human rights activist wrote.

As a result, the man was persuaded not to commit self-immolation.

Nurlan Asanbekov is now under house arrest.

  • The Committee for protection of Kempir-Abad reservoir was created on October 22, 2022. It includes activists, politicians and MPs. Mass arrests began on October 23. Authorities placed 27 people in jail on charges of preparing for riots. Currently, 8 people remain in custody.
