Armenia imposes restrictions on accepting Mir cards

Most banks in Armenia will stop servicing and accepting Mir cards. RBK reports, citing VTB Armenia.

Cards of Mir Russian payment system will stop working in ATMs and POS terminals of most banks of the country from March 30, the exception will be the infrastructure of VTB Armenia bank (a subsidiary of the Russian VTB). Now Mir cards work in Armenia and are accepted by local banks. A source of RBK in the Russian payment market also says about the imminent termination of the work of Mir cards in most banks.

«Starting March 30, users will no longer be able to make cashless payments at POS terminals and withdraw cash from ATMs of other banks in the republic. The work of VTB (Armenia) cards will not be affected in any way,» a representative of VTB Armenia said.

He added that the bank continues to service Mir cards in full.

In February, the United States introduced blocking sanctions against Mir card operator, the National Payment Card System of Russia. At the time of the introduction of restrictions, Mir cards, in addition to Armenia, worked in Kazakhstan, Belarus, Venezuela, Vietnam, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Cuba. But Kyrgyz banks have significantly reduced the functionality of using Mir cards in the republic. Earlier, for example, the Kazakh Bereke Bank, a former subsidiary of Sberbank, reported the cessation of work with Mir cards.
