President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that he would not change the Constitution and would not be re-elected as head of state in 2026. He said this in an interview with Egemen Qazaqstan.
According to the leader of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the rule according to which the president can be elected only once «will never change again.»
«According to the current Constitution, the head of state can be elected for one seven-year term, after which his powers end,» he noted.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev denied rumors of a plan to hold a referendum on changes to the Constitution and emphasized that the constitutional reform was not intended to further amend the Basic Law in its current form.
He told that he spoke about the idea of a single seven-year term in closed discussions 15 years ago, but then this proposal «did not find much support.» «After my election as president in 2019, our country moved to democratize the political system, provide freedom of public life and liberate the economy from monopoly,» the President of Kazakhstan added.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev won the early presidential elections on June 9, 2019 with 70.96 percent of the votes. On November 20, 2022, he won the elections with a result of 81.31 percent.
