The Heads of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have signed an agreement on the creation of an international organization to support and promote the Russian language. The decision was taken at today’s meeting.
The initiative to create the document was voiced last year by the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev said that the organization was created to strengthen friendship between the countries.
«It will solve several tasks, among which are support for quality education in Russian, assistance in training of pedagogical and scientific personnel. Under the auspices of the organization, scientific events, book exhibitions, film screenings, dictations will be held,» the CSTO Secretary General said.
The organization will help translate literary works of classical and modern authors into Russian and from Russian into other languages.
The order of financing the organization by the CIS countries will be worked out. The organization is open for other states to join its activities. At the first stage, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia will manage the organization and it will be located in Sochi.
