A New York court ruled that the former U.S. President Donald Trump overvalued his assets over the years to get more favorable terms from banks and insurance companies, The New York Times reports.

According to the media outlet, the court ruled that Trump could be prosecuted for fraud, which he was accused of by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The trial is set to begin in October.

Letitia James began investigating Trump’s activities in 2019 and filed a suit in 2022. According to prosecutors, the former head of the United States annually overstated the size of his fortune by at least $2.2 billion by overstating the value of real estate owned by him.

In his lawsuit, James demands to prohibit Trump and his sons Donald and Eric to hold executive positions in the Trump Organization, as well as to oblige the former president to compensate damages in the amount of about $250 million.

In turn, Trump called the case politically motivated. Most likely, he will appeal the decision, Bloomberg reports.
