The President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov within the framework of his working trip to Osh region got acquainted with the activities of Irkeshtam automobile checkpoint of the South-Western Customs of the Kyrgyz Republic in Alai district. Press service of the head of state reported.
The President was told about construction of a four-lane road with a total length of 3.4 kilometers. Work began in May 2023 after signing an agreement between Kyrgyzstan and China. The project also includes construction of a 187-meter-long elevated bridge and installation of a belt conveyor for coal transportation.
Completion of the project will allow to deliver coal from Kyrgyzstan to China by belt conveyor and relieve the load at the border crossing point.
Accordingly, there will be an opportunity for a significant increase in the flow of commodity cargo across the border.
The President instructed to fully modernize, expand the territory, build additional lanes and bring the customs infrastructure of Irkeshtam checkpoint into compliance in order to increase its capacity several times by October 1, 2023.
This is especially important in the fall and winter period, when the volume of coal exports from Kyrgyzstan to China increases. Additional funds will be allocated for these purposes.
The current throughput capacity of Irkeshtam checkpoint is 100 trucks and 60 cars. However, to date, customs operations in relation to more than 300 cars in both directions are carried out at the checkpoint, which causes traffic jams and queues in the border area.
