It is proposed to extend the ban on timber exports from Kyrgyzstan. The draft resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers was submitted for public discussion by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce.
The previous ban expires on August 1, 2023. The Ministry of Economy and Commerce considers it necessary to extend it for another six months until February 2024.
The ministry explains this measure by the need to prevent re-export to third countries of timber supplied from Russia to Kyrgyzstan.
According to the decree of the Russian government, an export quota of 29,680 cubic meters of timber has been allocated for Kyrgyzstan. The Russian Federation stated that the measure was due to the large flow of timber to third countries. Data from the National Statistical Committee show an increase in timber exports last year compared to 2021. The Economy Ministry believes that this, among other things, speaks of re-exports.
