Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan start restoration of Northern Sokh gas storage

The oil and gas departments of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have begun work on the restoration of Northern Sokh underground gas storage facility, located in the Uzbek Sokh enclave in the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic. Press service of Uztransgaz company reported.

In February, during the visit of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Bishkek, the Ministries of Energy of the two countries signed a roadmap to prepare a project for the restoration of Northern Sokh gas storage facility for joint use.

«A working group was formed from the Uzbek side, which visited Kadamdzhai district on April 10 to study issues as part of research on the project,» the statement says.

According to the press service, specialists from the design institute of Uzneftegaz company UzLITIneftegaz conducted a preliminary inspection of the gas wells of the storage facility and developed terms of reference for their field study.

Underground gas storage facility Northern Sokh was put into operation in 1976. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was not used and was the subject of a dispute between the two states — almost all of the storage is located on the territory of Kyrgyzstan, and the compressors — on the territory of Uzbekistan. The storage volume is about 3 billion cubic meters.
