Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to hold next round of negotiations

Representatives of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will hold the next stage of negotiations on the issue of disputed sections of the common border in March. TASS reported citing the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic.

«The government delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic from March 10 to March 16, 2023 will meet with colleagues from Tajikistan in Dushanbe, at which they will discuss the delimitation and demarcation of the common section of the state border,» the Cabinet of Ministers specified.

The working group of the Kyrgyz Republic includes 15 people headed by the special representative of the Cabinet of Ministers for border issues Nazirbek Borubaev.

The length of the state border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is about 980 kilometers. Negotiations on its delimitation have been ongoing since December 2002. Since 2017, Dushanbe and Bishkek have significantly stepped up this process. At present, more than two thirds of the line of the border have been determined and mutually recognized by the states, the remaining sections are considered disputable.

Shooting began at several sites of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the morning of September 16. Settlements in Leilek and Batken district came under fire. The Ministry of Health reported 206 victims, 63 people were killed. As a result of the armed conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, residents of seven villages in Batken and Leilek districts, as well as Dzhekendi village in Chon-Alai district of Osh region, left their homes.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan opened a criminal case on crimes against peace.
