The first mobile laboratory for harmful emissions monitoring appeared in Kyrgyzstan. The innovation that will help fight smog was presented in Bishkek at the main building of the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University (KRSU). The complex, assembled on the basis of a minibus, was designed by specialists from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology using Russian equipment.
According to Andrei Podrezov, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, the first stationary air quality monitoring station was opened in KRSU in December 2018. At that time, it made it possible to obtain continuous data on pollution in the same way as four Kyrgyzhydromet stations in the capital then made measurements only once a day.
«Even then, the information we received made it possible to determine that the main source of particulate pollution was the private sector with its stove heating. Transport does not play a leading role in this matter, what our officials, who are lobbying for various projects, do not want and cannot understand.
Many people talk about smog, but so far no one can provide accurate and comprehensive information about its causes. Each department hogs the blanket.
Air pollution is a state-level problem, and an integrated approach is needed here,» said the Candidate of Geographical Sciences.
Creation of a mobile laboratory for monitoring environmental safety and the technical condition of transport facilities, transport infrastructure and industry was conceived back in 2019.
«During this time, Kyrgyzhydromet, in addition to four stationary posts, installed 50 sensors around the city. They have been working for almost three years, but they have a minus — they can only analyze a certain point. Our laboratory allows us to take measurements near busy intersections, monitor and analyze the spread of pollution in the capital, taking into account the wind, and so on,» Andrei Podrezov told.
Among other things, the complex will monitor public transport.
In case of complaints from residents of Bishkek, environmentalists will be able to come to the final stop for an unscheduled technical inspection of a bus or minibus. This possibility is currently being discussed with the City Hall.
One of the main advantages is that all the equipment used has been certified, there is no doubt about the accuracy of the readings. The first, test studies have already been carried out at major intersections of the city during the morning, lunch and evening rush hours. Exceedance of permissible harmful emissions level was registered for all components.
