Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, who came to power after a bloody crackdown on Tiananmen Square protests, has died at the age of 96. BBC reports, citing Chinese state media.
Xinhua news agency reported that Jiang Zemin died on Wednesday.
Jiang Zemin served as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party from 1989 to 2002 and President of the People’s Republic of China from 1993 to 2003. He became the head of the world’s most populous country after the brutal crackdown on protesters in Tiananmen Square in June 1989.
