The highest concentrations of PM 2.5 particles, an air pollutant that includes both solid microparticles and tiny liquid droplets, are observed in the northern part of Bishkek. The study «Impact of air pollution on the health and social aspects of the lives of women and children in Bishkek» says.

It is noted that the average annual concentrations in different areas differ four times. The lowest ones are registered in the southern and central parts, which corresponds to the prevailing southerly winds in winter.

The eastern and western parts of the city have medium concentrations, while the northern parts have the highest concentrations.

«Zones where high concentration levels are observed coincide with zones where the use of coal-fired stoves is widespread,» said Edwards Rufus, researcher at the University of California.

He added that it was wrong to look only at outdoor air pollution. «People spend 93 percent of the time in Bishkek indoors. Pollution enters homes, offices and other places and, accordingly, people are exposed to its dangerous effects,» Edwards Rufus.
