Sadyr Japarov met with the President of the European Council Charles Michel in Astana. Press service of the head of state of Kyrgyzstan reports.
The parties discussed issues of topical directions and measures to strengthen political, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the EU countries. They also discussed a wide range of issues on the global agenda, including regional security.
Sadyr Japarov, thanking Charles Michel for the initiative to hold the first Central Asia — European Union summit, supported change of the format to a permanent high-level platform. He noted the positive dynamics in the development of bilateral partnership and interregional ties. Cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the European Union turns 30 years old this year. During this time, the EU has become a reliable partner and one of the leading donors of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The parties stressed the need to further strengthen bilateral relations, importance of a visit to the EU institutions and signing of a comprehensive agreement on enhanced partnership and cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the EU.
Sadyr Japarov raised the issue of extending the GSP+ status in relation to the Kyrgyz Republic.
He emphasized the relevance of intensifying trade and economic ties and promoting export of Kyrgyz goods to the European market.
The European Union considers cooperation with Central Asia as one of the most important areas, Charles Michel said. The European Union is ready to improve and intensify partnership with the region aimed at strengthening economic ties, in particular with Kyrgyzstan.
He also noted the forthcoming signing of an agreement on enhanced partnership and cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and the EU, announced his readiness to offer Kyrgyzstan specific projects for interaction.
