Invasion of Kyrgyzstan: Death toll rises to 62

As of September 24, the death toll from the military invasion of Kyrgyzstan by Tajikistan increased to 62 people. Arzybek Borubekov, healthcare coordinator for Batken region, announced today at a briefing.

According to him, a total of 198 citizens turned to medical institutions in the region for help, 61 of them were sent for outpatient treatment.

«Of all patients, 13 are children, 171 are men and the rest are women. The death toll as of September 24 is 62,» Arzybek Borubekov said.

The specialist added that more than 100 patients were transferred from Batken region to hospitals in Bishkek and Osh.

«According to operational information, it is known that four buildings of medical and obstetric centers and one building of a group of family doctors in the border villages of Batken are in need of major repairs. Two medical and obstetric centers in Dostuk and Kapchygai villages burned down completely,» Arzybek Borubekov informed.

The regional healthcare coordinator noted that damages are still being calculated. To date, representatives of the Ministry of Health are banned from entering some villages due to the tense situation.

He also added that mobile teams of doctors and psychologists continue working.

Earlier it was reported about 59 dead and 198 injured.

Emergency situation has been introduced in Batken region. Shooting began at several sites of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the morning of September 16. Settlements in Leilek and Batken district came under fire. As a result of the armed conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, residents of seven villages in Batken and Leilek districts, as well as Dzhekendi village in Chon-Alai district of Osh region, left their homes.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan opened a criminal case on crimes against peace.
