Muratbek Azymbakiev, head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic, met with Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in New York on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The parties discussed the situation that has developed as a result of an act of armed aggression by Tajikistan against Kyrgyzstan.
The Kyrgyz side brought to the attention of the head of European diplomacy a reliable chronology of events on September 14-17, 2022.
Muratbek Azymbakiev reported about 59 victims, more than 160 injured, more than 140,000 internally displaced persons, destruction of numerous social and civil infrastructure facilities, including schools and residential buildings, about the facts of seizure and looting of state property and the property of Kyrgyzstanis.
The official stressed the commitment of the Kyrgyz side to de-escalation and an unchanging position on resolving the situation exclusively through political and diplomatic means, and also drew the attention of Josep Borrell to the fact that the Kyrgyz side acted solely for the purpose of self-defense and protection of the sovereign territory of the republic from another unprovoked invasion of the Tajik Armed Forces.
Josep Borrell expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims. He noted that he was following the development of the situation with concern, called for its de-escalation, and also noted the importance of resolving it as soon as possible only through a constructive, peaceful dialogue between the parties.
The parties also discussed issues on the bilateral agenda, including plans for the near future to organize visits and events at various levels and trade and economic cooperation.
