Kyrgyzstan interested in intensifying political dialogue with Switzerland

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov met with the President of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, held in New York (USA). Press service of the head of state reported.

The state and prospects of cooperation in all areas that are of mutual interest to the countries, and the situation at the Kyrgyz-Tajik border were discussed. Speaking about bilateral cooperation, Sadyr Japarov focused on the fact that the Kyrgyz side was interested in intensifying the political dialogue with Switzerland. Regarding cooperation in the field of environmental protection, Kyrgyzstan attaches great importance to the issues of adaptation to climate change and increasing stability at all levels.

He noted that, like in Switzerland, melting of glaciers in Kyrgyzstan will undoubtedly affect the water and energy balance of the entire region, as well as the social, political situation in the countries of Central Asia.

Speaking about the situation on the border, Sadyr Japarov stressed that the Tajik side had brought troops to the Kyrgyz border in advance and attacked border and civilian facilities, settlements on Kyrgyz territory, using armed forces and heavy military equipment.

The President stressed that the fighting took place on Kyrgyz territory.

The head of Switzerland, Ignazio Cassis, announced his intention to strengthen and develop «good bilateral relations.» He noted that he was ready to support all the democratic initiatives of Sadyr Japarov.

Ignazio Cassis expressed condolences in connection with the situation at the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border. He thanked for the detailed information about the cooperation of Central Asian countries.

Shooting began at several sites of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the morning of September 16. Settlements in Leilek and Batken district came under fire. The Ministry of Health reported 198 victims, 59 people were killed. As a result of the armed conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, residents of seven villages in Batken and Leilek districts, as well as Dzhekendi village in Chon-Alai district of Osh region, left their homes.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan opened a criminal case on crimes against peace.
