Belarus refuses to extradite Bakiyev to Kyrgyzstan for the fourth time

The authorities of Belarus do not extradite the fugitive president of Kyrgyzstan Kurmanbek Bakiyev. The Prosecutor General’s Office informed 24.kg news agency.

Three criminal cases were initiated against Kurmanbek Bakiyev, within which, by a court verdict, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

«The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Kyrgyz Republic sent a petition to the supervisory authority of the Republic of Belarus for the recognition and execution on the territory of the Republic of Belarus of the sentences of the Military Court of the Bishkek garrison of the Military Court of the Kyrgyz Republic dated May 23, 2016. The Supreme Court amended the sentences on July 29, 2016. In total, four requests were sent to Belarus for the extradition of Kurmanbek Bakiyev in order to bring him to criminal liability,» the supervisory authority said.

The Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus refused to satisfy the petition of the Kyrgyz colleagues. According to the Belarusian side, the conviction of Kurmanbek Bakiyev is connected with persecution for political reasons.

Recall, Kurmanbek Bakiyev is accused of killing two or more people and abuse of power. The deposed head of state was sentenced to 30 years in prison, Janysh Bakiyev — to life imprisonment. Marat Bakiyev was sentenced to 27 years in prison. In addition, Kurmanbek Bakiyev was convicted in the case on the murder of the ex-head of the presidential administration Medet Sadyrkulov, former director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies Sergei Slepchenko and a driver Kubat Sulaimanov.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev was sentenced to 24 years in prison, and his brother Janysh was sentenced to life imprisonment with confiscation of property. The latter was also deprived of the military rank of lieutenant general.

In addition, the investigators brought several more charges against the fugitive president, including illegal land transformation.
