The U.S. has declared monkeypox a public state emergency. Deutsche Welle reports, citing the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra.
«We are ready to take the virus response to the next level and urge every American to take monkeypox seriously,» he said during a telephone briefing.
Declaring of a public health emergency will allow the country’s authorities to attract additional funding and specialists to fight the disease. Earlier, the state of emergency due to monkeypox was declared in the states of New York, California and Illinois.
The United States is the country with the highest number of reported cases of monkeypox. According to the U.S. Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 7,000 cases have been registered in the country.
In July, WHO declared the monkeypox outbreak a global public health emergency.
Monkeypox is a rare infectious disease most prevalent in remote areas of Central and West Africa. Its symptoms are nausea, fever, rash, itching, and muscle pain.
