Tajikistan and Turkmenistan to sign Friendship Treaty in near future

Tajikistan and Turkmenistan will sign a Treaty on friendship, good neighborliness and cooperation between the countries of Central Asia in the near future. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Jeenbek Kulubaev told at a press conference.

According to him, the agreement on signing the document was reached at the level of Foreign Ministers.

«Tajikistan and Turkmenistan did not sign the treaty because they did not complete the preparation procedures within the state on time. As soon as they are completed, they will sign the document,» Jeenbek Kulubaev believes.

These procedures, according to the Foreign Minister of Kyrgyzstan, may take several weeks.

The 4th Consultative Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia was held in Cholpon-Ata on July 20-21. As a result, the Presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Sadyr Japarov and Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a Treaty on friendship, good neighborliness and cooperation. The heads of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan abstained.

The document should lay the foundation for the rapprochement of the countries of the region outside the EAEU. The five states of the region will be obliged to resolve disputed issues within the framework of the agreement and exclusively through dialogue, including through the creation of appropriate mechanisms for interaction, if necessary.

The parties also approved a roadmap for implementation of the agreement for a period of two years — 2022-2024.
