Kassym-Jomart Tokayev about implementation of joint hydropower projects

Cholpon-Ata city is hosting the 4th Consultative Meeting of the Heads of Central Asian countries.

«Kazakhstan attaches particular importance to the implementation of joint hydropower projects for the mutually beneficial use of water resources of transboundary rivers. In this context, the project of construction of Kambarata HPP 1 in Kyrgyzstan is being actively discussed. The hydropower plant will strengthen the energy security of the Central Asian states, improve conditions for expanding agricultural production,» the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

He also called on the leaders of the countries of the region to step up cooperation within the framework of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea.

The leader of the Republic of Kazakhstan commended the participation of the Kyrgyz side in the regional working group for improving its organizational structure and legal framework and expressed hope for the resumption of full-fledged cooperation with the Kyrgyz side within the framework of this fund.

The first Consultative Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia was held in Nur-Sultan (2018), the second — in Tashkent (2019). In 2020, the summit was planned to be held in Kyrgyzstan, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was postponed for a year. Turkmenistan hosted the third meeting in August 2021.
