Bishkek has lost a fifth of its green areas for seven years. Archa Initiative provided such data on Twitter.

The environmental organization noted that every year, since 2014, they conduct study of green zones of the capital using NDVI technology.

«This allows us to quickly obtain data on the forest plantations in the city. So we can see that 479 hectares of forest plantations disappeared in Bishkek, and only 250 hectares appeared. In other words, from 2014 to 2021, the capital lost 20 percent of its green areas. This trend continues today,» the activists noted.

Another factor in the decline of vegetation is the amount of precipitations. «Analyzing the data, it became clear that Bishkek has entered a low water period. Such dependence shows vulnerability of green spaces to climate change,» the organization added.

The foundation believes that it is necessary to develop modern technologies in irrigation as one of the adaptation measures for the efficient use of water resources.

«Pay special attention to drought-tolerant plants for urban landscaping, as they are more resistant to climate change,» the environmentalists stressed.
