Kassym-Jomart Tokayev explains why Kazakhstan does not recognize DPR, LPR

The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during his speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, said that his country does not recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. Foreign media report.

According to them, he believes that if the right of nations to self-determination is fully realized, this will lead to chaos.

«Modern international law is the UN charter. But two UN principles came into conflict — the integrity of the state and the right of the nation to self-determination. These principles contradict each other, there are different interpretations. Some say that territorial integrity is a holy concept, a holy category, while others argue that any peoples that are part of this or that state can secede from it at their own will,» the President of Kazakhstan said.

According to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, modern world borders guarantee stability. For this reason, Kazakhstan does not recognize South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Kosovo, Taiwan and «quasi-state» formations in Donbass.

«It has been calculated that if the right of nations to self-determination is actually realized, then instead of the 193 states that are now members of the UN, more than 500 or 600 states will emerge on Earth. Of course, it will be chaos. For this reason, we don’t recognize Taiwan, Kosovo, South Ossetia, or Abkhazia. Apparently, this principle will be applied to the quasi-states, which, in our view, Luhansk and Donetsk are,» he concluded.
