As part of the implementation of «Ray of Light» program, it was decided to revive Women’s Councils in regions of Kyrgyzstan in order to combat gender-based violence. The UN Office in Kyrgyzstan reports.
It is noted that Women’s Councils have already implemented a number of local initiatives in Osh, Chui and Naryn regions to inform the population about scale of the increase in violence against women.
«There is an acute need, among other problems, to prevent and solve the problem of domestic violence in the regions. The women and children who are exposed to it day by day out suffer. Women are often the first to turn to Women’s Councils for help. In this regard, within the framework of the project, a lot of work has been done to revive and strengthen the role of Women’s Councils: multi-stage trainings on gender legislation, peacebuilding, mediation,» the statement says.
As part of a global initiative, the European Union and the United Nations, together with the Government of Kyrgyzstan, launched a country program to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.
