Construction of Kambarata HPP-1 starts in Kyrgyzstan

President of Kyrgyzstan launched construction of Kambarata Hydropower Plant-1 in Jalal-Abad region. Press service of the head of the state reported.

Sadyr Japarov pressed the button on the control panel in a live television broadcast that was followed by an explosion, which symbolized the start of the large-scale construction.

A part of the infrastructure — bases, roads, and quarries — is ready at the construction site of the HPP-1. The 500 kilovolt high voltage Datka-Kemin line is located nearby. This will allow Kambarata HPP-1 to bear the lowest costs on the power delivery scheme.

«Due to the construction of Kambarata HPP-1, the issues of power supply to the population of the republic during winter period will be resolved. In future, the growing electricity consumption in the country will be met and export potential within CASA-1000 project will be ensured,» presidential press service reported.

Kambarata HPP-1 will be the largest power facility of the whole cascade of Kambarata hydropower plants. The project implies construction of a 256-meter high rock-fill dam and the power plant with the installed capacity of 1,860 megawatts. The Kambarata HPP-1 will generate an average of 5.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity with a full reservoir volume of 5.4 billion cubic meters of water.

Construction period is from 8 to 10 years. Commissioning of the first hydroelectric unit of the HPP is planned in four years, if there is permanent financing.
