New U.S.-Kyrgyzstan cooperation agreement ready for signing

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs and the former ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Donald Lu discussed a new agreement on cooperation between the two countries during a meeting with Kyrgyz authorities. Azattyk reports with reference to Donald Lu.

«We have prepared an agreement and look forward to signing it soon. We have invited Kyrgyzstan’s new Foreign Minister to Washington and the Secretary of State Blinken is looking forward to the meeting. A meeting was recently held in Washington with a number of Central Asian ministers, and we look forward to establishing a high-level relationship with your government,» Donald Lu said.

In May 2021, before completing his diplomatic mission in Kyrgyzstan, Donald Lu, who had been working on the adoption of a new agreement for almost three years, reported the end of negotiations on technical issues, noting that «the political will of Bishkek and Washington is needed to sign the agreement.»

The 1993 framework document was denounced in 2015 at the initiative of the Kyrgyz side because of a State Department’s award to a human rights activist Azimzhan Askarov. The latter passed away on July 25, 2020 in prison colony 47.
