Leaders and active members of Hizb ut-Tahrir detained in Kyrgyzstan

Activities of a clandestine cell of the religious extremist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir were suppressed in Aksy district of Jalal-Abad region. Press service of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan (SCNS) reported.

According to the SCNS, four leaders and eight active members of Hizb ut-Tahrir were detained in Kerben on May 1 within a criminal case under Article 331 (Creation and financing of extremist organizations) of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic during a monthly meeting.

«A large amount of extremist literature, leaflets, mobile phones, computer towers, electronic data storage devices and reports on the financial activities of the cell were seized,» the state committee said.

According to the SCNS, the detainees regularly conducted «religious classes to promote extremist ideology and distributed extremist materials through social media.» They were placed in the pre-trial detention center in Jalal-Abad.

Since 2003, the activities of 21 religious organizations recognized as extremist or terrorist have been legally banned on the territory of Kyrgyzstan. They include Jabhat al-Nusra, Jais al-Mahdi, Ansaru l-Lakh, Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami, Jihad Group, East Turkestan Islamic Movement and other international extremist organizations.
