Socialist International Secretary General: We see lack of freedom and rights

Hearing of the criminal case on the October 2020 riots continues in the Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek.

Farid Niyazov, ex-chief of the presidential staff, was brought to the court under escort. Former head of state Almazbek Atambayev was not brought to court.

The Secretary General of the World Organization of Socialist and Social Democratic Parties (Socialist International) Luis Ayala is present at the trial today.

He said that today he would visit the former president Almazbek Atambayev in the prison colony 27.

«We are here at the behest of all the social democratic parties of the world. We are glad that there are representatives of such a political organization in Kyrgyzstan. We are concerned about the fate of Almazbek Atambayev. We are following the developments in the Kyrgyz Republic with great concern. Democracy requires justice. We position all Democrats who fight for freedom and justice. Here (in Kyrgyzstan) we see a lack of freedom and rights. An example of this is the case of Almazbek Atambayev. We hope for justice,» Luis Ayala said.

Rallies were held in Bishkek on October 5-6, 2020 against falsification of the results of the parliamentary elections. Then the riots began. On October 6, under pressure from the public, the Central Election Commission was forced to annul the election results. Several convicted politicians were released from prison colonies.

On October 9, Almazbek Atambayev, his supporters, Omurbek Babanov and others announced another rally. A brawl broke out on the square between supporters of Sadyr Japarov and the former head of state.

Later, the State Committee for National Security and the Ministry of Internal Affairs detained many of them, including Almazbek Atambayev, an activist Temirlan Sultanbekov, Farid Niyazov, Kanat Sagymbaev, Kursan Asanov. Some of them are still in custody. Others are under house arrest.
