Supporters of Almazbek Atambayev demand his release

Another trial of the case on the October 2020 riots is to be held today in Pervomaisky district court of Bishkek.

About 20 supporters of former president Almazbek Atambayev came to the court building. They demanded his release.

One of the protesters said there was information that Maxim Bakiyev had arrived in the country. According to him, people came out on the square on April 7, 2010 not to bring back the son of the deposed president.

Almazbek Atambayev’s wife Raisa, his daughter Aliya Shagieva and other relatives of the defendant also came to the court building.

On October 5-6, 2020, rallies were held in Bishkek to protest the rigged parliamentary election results. Then the riots broke out. On October 6, under public pressure, the Central Election Commission was forced to annul the election results. Several convicted politicians were released from prison colonies.

On 9 October, Almazbek Atambayev, his supporters, Omurbek Babanov and others announced another rally. A scuffle broke out between supporters of Sadyr Japarov and the former head of state on the square.

Later, the State Committee for National Security and the Ministry of Internal Affairs detained many of them, including Almazbek Atambayev, activist Temirlan Sultanbekov, Farid Niyazov, Kanat Sagymbaev, Kursan Asanov. Some of them are still in custody. Others are under house arrest.
