Kyrgyzstan’s delegation participates in World Water Forum in Dakar

A delegation of representatives of government agencies of the Kyrgyz Republic took part in the 9th World Water Forum in Dakar, Senegal.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, the purpose of the forum under the theme «Water security for peace and development» was to accelerate and effectively implement the global water agenda, which is a prerequisite for achieving sustainable development, especially in countries where water is of vital importance.

The focus was on four priorities:

  • Water security and sanitation;
  • Water for rural development;
  • Cooperation, tools and instruments, including crucial issues of financing, governance, knowledge management and innovations.

More than 3,000 people from near and far abroad countries took part in 90 official sessions within the framework of the forum. A representative of the Kyrgyz Republic spoke at a special session «Cooperation of Central Asian countries to ensure water security in the context of climate change».

The negative impact of climate change on Kyrgyzstan was noted. Particular attention was paid to reduction of water resources as a result of glacier melting, decrease in seasonal precipitation and other factors. It was noted that the rational and efficient use of water resources and their energy potential under observed increase in demand for water and energy resources in the country is one of the priority tasks for Kyrgyzstan.

It was stated that it is necessary to improve mechanism of water and energy cooperation, which would provide balanced exchange of water and energy resources in Central Asia.

The Dakar Declaration was adopted on the results of the forum, which calls for encouraging innovative financing mechanisms and private sector investments in water supply and sanitation.
