Starting from September 2022, it is planned to start vaccination of girls against human papillomavirus (HPV) in Kyrgyzstan. The Republican Center for Immunoprophylaxis informed 24.kg news agency.
According to Raisa Asylbasheva, Chief Specialist of the Department of Medical Care and Drug Policy of the Ministry of Health, the mortality rate from cervical cancer in Kyrgyzstan is very high.
The purpose of this vaccination is to prevent cervical cancer and reduce the risk of cancer.
Children at the age of 11 will be vaccinated. Support is provided by development partners.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends to vaccinate all girls between the ages of 9 and 14 with two doses of the vaccine.
HPV is a group of viruses that infect the skin or various mucous membranes (such as the mouth or cervix). The most common strains of sexually transmitted HPV can cause cervical cancer in women, as well as genital papillomas and other cancers in women and men. HPV is easily transmitted from person to person: at some point in life, about 80 percent of all people become infected with one or more strains of the virus.
In most cases, cervical papillomavirus infection is asymptomatic. The infection usually lasts 1-2 years and goes away on its own. However, in at least one out of ten cases it takes a protracted character and can provoke appearance of precancerous neoplasms. If these neoplasms are not detected and removed in time, they can develop into cervical cancer within years or decades.
Vaccination is recommended not only for girls, but also for boys.
