Tverskoy District Court of Moscow has banned the activities of Meta in Russia, declaring the organization extremist.

Use by individuals and legal entities of Meta Platforms products, which include Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, cannot be considered as extremism, said the prosecutor in court, where the application of the Prosecutor General’s Office to recognize Meta as an extremist organization and ban its activities in Russia was considered.

«The use of Meta’s products by individuals and entities should not be considered as participation in extremist activities,» he said.

«Individuals will not be prosecuted simply because they use Meta’s services,» the prosecutor explained.

«Meta will be barred from opening branches and conducting commercial activities. We are talking about banning activities of the company and its business structures,» the prosecutor’s representative stressed.

The Prosecutor General’s Office demands to ban the work of the company, which runs the social media Instagram, Facebook and messenger WhatsApp, in Russia. The grounds for this appeal were the temporary lifting of the ban for residents of a number of countries to post information containing calls for violence against Russian citizens.

The Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case on calls for violence and murder against the Russians in connection with the actions of the company’s employees. Roskomnadzor had previously restricted the operation of Instagram and Facebook in Russia. Work of WhatsApp messenger was not restricted.
