Minipark to be built on site of president’s residence in Almaty

It was decided to demolish the official residence of the President of Kazakhstan in Almaty. The building was on fire during the riots in early January 2022. Spokesman for Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Berik Uali, announced on Facebook.

«According to the decision of the head of state, his official residence in Almaty, which was destroyed and set on fire during the January events, will be demolished. A minipark for the townspeople will be laid out in its place,» the message says.

The residence building was completely looted and burned down on the night of January 6, 2022.

Mass protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2, 2022. Residents of Zhanaozen and Aktau in Mangistau region opposed an increase in prices for liquefied gas, then the protests spread to other regions.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev introduced a state of emergency in the republic, dismissed the government and became the head of the Security Council. At his request, the CSTO countries sent peacekeeping units to Kazakhstan.
