Serdar Berdymukhamedov has been nominated as a candidate for president of Turkmenistan. Chronicle of Turkmenistan reports.
Members of the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan nominated the son of the current head of the country at the extraordinary 9th congress on Monday. Speakers at the congress noted «the outstanding leadership and organizational qualities» of Serdar Berdymukhamedov. Members of the political organization believe the candidate has extensive managerial experience, having worked at a committee of the Majlis, as a Deputy Foreign Minister, governor of Akhal velayat, Minister of Industry, Chairman of the Supreme Control Chamber, member of the Security Council and the Deputy Prime Minister.
The proposal to nominate the son of the former president Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov was unanimously accepted.
Names of other candidates have not yet been announced.
Any citizen of Turkmenistan born in the republic, at least 40 years old, who speaks the state language, and who has permanently resided and worked in the country for 15 years may be elected president. President is elected by the people for a seven-year term.
On February 11, at an extraordinary meeting of the Khalk Maslakhaty, the Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov announced his desire to hand over control to «young leaders,» that is, he actually announced his resignation as the head of state.
