Another Kyrgyzstani arrested for January events in Kazakhstan

Talgat Temirkan uulu, a citizen of Kyrgyzstan, has been kept in the remand prison 13 in Taraz (Kazakhstan) since January 28. The head of the Ombudsman’s Office Askat Azarbekov told at a press conference.

According to him, on the night of January 6, he drove past the city square where the mass riots took place. The Kyrgyzstani was shot in the arm, he was hospitalized.

«He was in the hospital until January 14. Then the police took him away, abused and tortured him. The citizen of Kyrgyzstan was released at about 00.00. Because of the curfew he was detained again, he was in custody for five days, then he went home. He stayed at home until January 28. The Kyrgyz did not report torture to the police. However, the migrant worker’s home was searched and four cartridges were found that could not have been there. His mother and the man himself claim that they were planted on purpose,» Askat Azarbekov told.

He stressed that recently the delegation of the Office of the Ombudsman and the National Centre for Prevention of Torture visited Kazakhstan and assured the Commissioner for Human Rights that the Kyrgyz citizens had nothing to do with staging the January mass unrest.

After the riots in Kazakhstan, according to official information, five Kyrgyzstanis were detained. Musician Vikram Ruzakhunov was among them, who was released after a public outcry. Four more Kyrgyz were released on January 15.

Cholponbek Sydykov was also detained during the January events in Almaty. The man said that he had been beaten at the city’s police station. The victim was brought to Bishkek and hospitalized in the Bishkek Research Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics in a serious condition — he had multiple injuries and fractures. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a note of protest to the Kazakh side.
