The Istanbul prosecutor’s office initiated an investigation in relation to social media users who posted insulting messages in response to the statement of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that he had contracted the Omicron strain. TASS reported.
According to NTV channel, at least one suspect has already been detained so far in Bagcilar district of Istanbul. He is accused of publishing provocative and offensive content sufficient to constitute a crime.
It is specified that a law on insulting the president is in force in the republic, under which a person can be held criminally liable. This violation is punished by 1-4 years in prison.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently reported on social media that he had been infected with Omicron strain. According to the president of Turkey, he has a mild form.
The Turkish president was vaccinated with the Chinese Sinopharm’s coronavirus vaccine last year.
