Situation in Kazakhstan: Nursultan Nazarbayev barred from politics

The Majilis of Parliament of Kazakhstan approved amendments to the Constitution of the country on abolition of the rights of Nursultan Nazarbayev to influence political issues. The media report, citing the press service of the Parliament.

Arman Kojakhmetov, Chairman of the Committee on Legislation, Judicial and Legal Reform, explained that the draft constitutional law was submitted to the Majilis of Parliament in accordance with the government resolution of December 21, 2021. The bill was approved by the Majilis on January 19, 2022 and sent to the Senate with two positions.

«The Senate supported the amendments with one remark: it was proposed to exclude part 6 of article 1 of the constitutional law on the first president of Kazakhstan Elbasy that the developed initiatives on the main directions of domestic and foreign policy shall be coordinated with the first leader of Kazakhstan Elbasy,» Arman Kojakhmetov said.

The document says that «the initiatives developed in the main directions of domestic and foreign policy are agreed with the first president of the country».

The bill is to be signed by the head of state Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
