Mass power outage in Central Asia occurred on January 25 due to a short circuit at Syrdarya thermal power plant. The Kazakhstan Electricity Grid Operating Company (KEGOC) informed about it. Tengrinews.kz reports.
It is noted that on January 25, 2022 at 11.59 a.m. (Nur-Sultan time), six power units of the Syrdarya thermal power plant (TPP) in Uzbekistan switched off because of a short circuit with a total loss of generation of more than 1,500 megawatts. The resulting power shortage in the Uzbek energy system led to an unauthorized withdrawal of power from the energy system of Kazakhstan, which is connected to the parallel operation together with the energy systems of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
«As a result, there was a power surge on the transit 500-kilovolt North — East — South of Kazakhstan with its subsequent overloading. In order to prevent damage to power equipment and full shut down of the southern regions of the country by the automated system, the transit was separated with the transfer of Almaty, Zhambyl, Turkestan and Kyzylorda regions to isolated operation,» the company said.
According to KEGOC, the power systems of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan were completely shut down with disconnection of all power plants and consumers. The disconnected load in the energy system of Uzbekistan was about 9,600 megawatts (100 percent of consumption), while in Kyrgyzstan — about 2,600 megawatts (100 percent of consumption).
At about noon on January 25 Kyrgyzstanis reported power outages and lack of water. The blackout was also reported by the residents of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
