Construction of nuclear power plant planned in Kyrgyzstan

Rosatom and Kyrgyzstan have agreed to cooperate in the construction of a small nuclear power plant. The Department of Communications of the Russian State Corporation reported.

Presentation of Russian low-power nuclear technologies took place the day before on the sidelines of the Expo 2020 world exhibition in Dubai. Rosatom and the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan signed a memorandum of cooperation in the construction of small nuclear power plants.

The parties expressed interest in the development of cooperation in the construction of a small nuclear power plant based on the RITM-200N reactor on the territory of Kyrgyzstan. The document also envisages assistance in the development of nuclear infrastructure of Kyrgyzstan as well as joint work to improve the skills of scientific and technical personnel in various fields of peaceful use of atomic energy.

«Implementation of small nuclear power plant projects is one of the most important priorities of Rosatom, which in the future will significantly change the energy balance of many countries and contribute to the development of remote areas with closed energy systems. Construction of such a station in Kyrgyzstan will not only contribute to energy independence of the country, but will also positively influence the quality of life and development of scientific and technological potential of the entire Central Asian region,» the Director General of Rosatom Alexey Likhachev said.

The Deputy Minister of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic Tilek Aitaliev noted that decarbonization and development of green energy sources is a current global trend, from which Kyrgyzstan does not want to stay away.

«We are confident that further cooperation with Rosatom will open new horizons for the development of energy, economy and industry in our country,» he concluded.
