Kyrgyzstan introduces new model for overcoming poverty

A new model for overcoming poverty «Products in exchange for labor» is being introduced in Kyrgyzstan. Press service of the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Migration reported.

According the ministry, a similar model of helping families in need is now being introduced around the world. Its implementation became possible in the country thanks to the work of the WFP Country Office in the Kyrgyz Republic.

Minister Kudaibergen Bazarabaev noted that this program has shown its effectiveness in the republic. «The Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Migration, together with WFP, is starting to introduce new mechanisms to get out of poverty. We will move from passive forms of assistance to active ones, when low-income families are offered tools and financial support to start a business, run their own household,» he said at a meeting with Ram Saravanamuttu, WFP Acting Country Director in the Kyrgyz Republic.

It is noted that active social protection measures involve mobilization of the population for the development of sustainable agricultural infrastructure and community assets, income-generating activities (vegetable, horticultural, fish farming, agroforestry, fodder production, product processing) and vocational training.

«WFP, in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Migration and other partners, has launched a state program of short-term trainings and consultations, mainly in the agricultural area — cattle breeding, crop production, storage and processing of agricultural products. To date, the training program includes 68 practical courses, which are held at professional lyceums,» the ministry noted.

WFP is also helping small farmers in targeted areas set up businesses, such as agricultural processing, in line with market demands and local opportunities.
