At least 30 schools will be built and reconstructed within the framework of ERIK project. Press service of the Ministry of Education and Science reported.

According to the ministry, the schools were selected in several stages and on the basis of criteria developed by the World Bank and agreed with the Cabinet of Ministers. Such parameters as seismicity of the building site, its structural type and degree of vulnerability, occupancy of the school and cost-effectiveness to increase its resistance to natural disasters were taken into account. As a result, the list of schools was approved following a meeting of an interdepartmental working group. It includes educational institutions from all regions of the country.

«Fourteen of the selected schools are in disrepair and must be demolished and new buildings should be constructed. The rest have not had major repairs for a long time, they are not safe in terms of seismic stability. Many educational institutions function without indoor toilets,» the ministry noted.

The selected schools will undergo capital reconstruction and construction taking into account the seismic safety and energy efficiency requirements, and their water supply, sanitation and hygiene systems will be improved, including the construction of indoor toilets.

The Ministry of Education and Science reminded that the ERIK project, financed by the World Bank, supports the Cabinet of Ministers in creating a safe educational environment. «To date, work is already underway to prepare design documents for the construction and reconstruction of 10 educational institutions located in the most earthquake-prone areas of Kyrgyzstan,» the ministry added.
