The exchange price of gas in Europe reached $1,758 at the peak of trading but then fell below the mark of $1,700 per 1,000 cubic meters. RBC reports.

The price of gas exceeded $1,700 on December 16. At that time the increase followed the reports that Gazprom did not book the capacity of the Yamal-Europe pipeline for December 17, and that no decision on the certification of Nord Stream 2 in Germany is expected in the first half of 2022.

As RIA Novosti noted with reference to GSA Platform data, Gazprom continues to reduce the pumping of gas through the Yamal-Europe pipeline and on Sunday booked only 4.3 percent of capacity for transit through Poland for Monday.

The day before, EU High Representative Josep Borrell said Russia was using energy resources as an instrument of political influence. According to him, the country fulfills its gas supply obligations, but «many people believe that the refusal to increase exports to Europe or to fill Gazprom-owned storage facilities is a tool to put pressure on the EU» and to ensure the certification of Nord Stream 2.

A noticeable increase in the price of gas in Europe began in April-May. At that time, the average TTF spot price varied in the range of $250-300 per 1,000 cubic meters. The gas prices have grown almost six times for a year.
