40 percent of Kyrgyzstanis believe that their rights are not respected

Results of a two-year EU project «Open Communities — Open Media» were summed up in Bishkek at the conference «Social partnership of government, civil society and media».

The head of the Ombudsman’s Office, Askat Azarbekov, said that a human rights index was determined in Kyrgyzstan.

«At least 36 percent of more than 3,000 surveyed Kyrgyzstanis did not even know about the activities of the Ombudsman’s Office, they were also not aware of the human rights. Forty percent of respondents noted that their rights are not respected, such as the right to education, medical services. «Open Communities — Open Media» project gave impetus to work in this direction,» Azarbekov said.

The ombudsman’s chief of staff also said government agencies must be more open to the public and the media. Eighteen percent of all respondents said they noted a lack of respect for the right to receive information from the local government. Local government bodies do not have websites where you can obtain information about their activities.

A study was also conducted to determine the level of freedom of speech and expression, the most urgent problems of vulnerable groups in the target regions of the country.

«Kyrgyzstan starts with the regions. We, the activists of small public councils, are needed as a relevant and effective movement to promote the interests of citizens at the local level,» the leader of the small public council of Jalal-Abad region Anarkul Mashaeva said.

Earlier it was reported that nine projects for cooperation between the local authorities and the population, strengthening the activities of ministries and agencies have been implemented in 2018 within the EU project «Strengthening involvement of civil society in public councils in Kyrgyzstan».
