The World Health Organization (WHO) informs that the Omicron strain is less dangerous than Delta. RIA Novosti reported.
According to the organization, this strain of the virus may reduce the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, but it is not as dangerous as the Delta strain.
«To date, there are limited data and no confirmed evidence that the vaccines are effective against Omicron. Preliminary data and the significantly altered profile of the antigenic protein of the Omicron strain suggest reduced vaccine efficacy against infection and transmission of the variant,» the WHO said in a statement.
The organization noted that preliminary data suggests that the new strain will be less dangerous, because the most cases detected were asymptomatic or with mild to moderate symptoms.
The WHO added that Omicron has already been registered in 63 countries. The organization predicts it will surpass the Delta strain in the rate of spread worldwide.
