CEC of Kyrgyzstan consents to prosecution of Akbokon Tashtanbekov

The Central Election Commission of Kyrgyzstan (CEC) gave its consent to holding parliamentary candidate Akbokon Tashtanbekov criminally liable. The decision was made at its meeting yesterday.

The CEC members unanimously upheld a motion of the Investigation Department of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS). Uluk Barakanov, an investigator of the SCNS, informed the CEC about the details of the criminal case against this candidate. He noted that citizens involved in the case were put on the wanted list.

Nurzhan Shaildabekova, CEC head, said the decision would not affect the candidate’s status. Dissenting parties may appeal to the court.

Whatever decision the CEC makes, it will not affect a candidate’s status, she said. Akbokon Tashtanbekov will remain a candidate for deputy.

Earlier, the press center of SCNS reported that a criminal case was initiated against Akbokon Tashtanbekov, a candidate for Parliament in Issyk-Ata consistency No. 30. A video was published on social media, in which the candidate threatens a man of another nationality. Facebook users demanded to punish Akbokon Tashtanbekov for inciting ethnic hatred.
