A project of the World Health Organization and the World Diabetes Foundation to combat noncommunicable diseases with a focus on diabetes is launched in Kyrgyzstan. The WHO reports.

The project will be implemented for three years to improve access to prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), with a focus on diabetes.

It was also launched in Uzbekistan. The total budget for the two countries is over $1 million.

«We are very glad to be able to continue the fight against noncommunicable diseases in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Diabetes results in a tragic loss for both people and the economy. The project is a major step forward, and its impact will be noticeable not only in two countries, but throughout the European region, as progress will be spread,» Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, said.

The WHO estimates that the age-standardized prevalence of diabetes in Kyrgyzstan was about 8.8 percent in 2013, almost double the 1980 rate (almost 5 percent).

Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mainly strike at the working-age population, causing serious economic losses to society.
